We Could All Use a Little RAIN

It is the single most common problem in the world I would think: how to effectively deal with negativity in oneself and others. I am always looking for more tools for my therapy toolbox to use against unhealthy feelings and thoughts. Recently I was turned on to a meditation-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy fusion technique that I am finding very helpful.

Tara Brach is a psychologist and meditation teacher who puts forward a model called RAIN in her latest book, True Refuge. In a nutshell, first Recognize the emotion and feelings you are having. This might require some additional training if you were encouraged to disavow your feelings growing up or have alexithymia due to an underlying condition or personality traits. Second,  Accept that you are having that feeling.  Remind yourself to “soften” the feeling a bit. Try relaxing the part of the body where you feel that upset. Third,  Investigate the negative reaction. This is where we look deeper, expand our perspective. Often there is more than meets the eye.  We think we are upset about one thing (often blaming someone or something else),  when there is a bigger, more pervasive cause of our suffering.  Ask yourself “What is really going on here?  What am I really upset about?” The answer could be psychological, philosophical, chemical, hormonal, physiological…or a combination of several factors. Finally, when you do you this investigation successfully,  you will automatically achieve more Non-Identification.  In other words, you realize that you are not your feelings and thoughts, and others are not what you label them as, either.

I encourage you to read up on this technique and try it out.  It might be helpful to have your therapist or meditation teacher walk you through the steps at first. If you haven’t added meditation to your own “toolbox” yet, now would also be a good time.
